1999 State Results and Teams
In 1998 the Men's Open, Women's Open, Under 18's, and Lord's Taverners were played at
Parklands Indoor Cricket Centre, at the Gold Coast.
The Master's National Championships were hosted by Windsor Gardens in Adelaide, and they
did an extremely professional job given the short notice (after Woodlands burnt down!).
The teams involved were Over 30's Women, and Over 30, 35 and 40 Men.
Paul Smith (Captain)..................................................[Keeper]
After the fantastic results of 1997 (in Adelaide) where the team Won 4 and Lost 3, but still managed to find a way to not make the finals, there was an expectation that this would be the year. However it was not to be. South Australia finished 5th (again) after destroying ACT, Tasmania and Northern Territory, but failing to beat any of the major teams.
It was extremely disappointing as we simply didn't go one better than 1997, and that is basically not good enough. The 1999 Titles are in Brisbane, and under new State Coach Mark Hogan, the side can hopefully take the next step into the Finals.
The following shows who played which games, and then general comments on their tournament.
Paul Smith (Played All 7 games) - "Flea" batted very well through most of the tournament partnered with Shane Martin. They scored 30+ on a few occasions, however they also scored single figures on a couple of occasions. Paul was SA's best bowler, especially as he usually took it upon himself to take the first over, and he regularly picked up an early wicket.
Chad Campbell (Played All 7 games) - Chad opened the batting with Darren Martin on most occasions, but unfortunately he didn't fire as well as he would have liked. Chad sets very high standards for himself, and I think he will agree that he didn't reach those standards. However his bowling and clever cricket brain were his main weapons during the tournament, as he featured in a number of well constructed wickets. Chad was hampered slightly by an ongoing knee complaint, but his committment even under duress was unquestioned.
Darren Martin (Played All 7 games) - Once again Darren had a consistent tournament with the bat, only faltering in one or two games. He also gave the side a spark while fielding on the 2-line, as he performed several inspirational dives and throws. In what could well be his last Open tournament, Dagy once again turned it on when it counted.
Shane Martin (Played All 7 games) - Batted very well with Flea, with only a couple of disappointing performances. As the strike bowler in our side, he filled this role admirably by bowling quick and straight and bringing the front half into the game. His performance at Cover during the carnival was magnificent, and this was one of the reasons he came equal Runner-Up in Player of the Series.
Scott Heywood (ACT,WA,NSW,QLD,TAS,VIC) - Scotty is one of the most solid bats in this side, and he built on this reputation by consistently hitting the side nets and scrambling the ones. His bowling wasn't as consistent as he would have liked, but this was overshadowed by some truly inspirational efforts on the 2-line, where he manufactured some wickets out of thin air.
Matt Skrokov (NSW,QLD) - The Rookie of the side, Matt was probably unlucky to only play 2 games, as he performed well in both. Thrown in against the big guns, he bowled with good pace and swing, and gave both sides some trouble. Matt also performed well at point giving Shane Martin a useful ally on the off side. Matt's only weakness is his batting, but he put this theory to rest as he slapped both NSW and QLD with confidence. Matt will play more State Cricket and will prove a valuable part of our finals campaigns.
John Lonergan (ACT,WA,NT,TAS,VIC) - As they did in 1997, John and Michael George proved a formidable batting combination. In their last 8 partnerships their lowest score is 26. John has contributed to this by batting solidly throughout and providing the team with a consistent batsman who can handle pressure. Although John's weakest point is his bowling, he picked up a number of wickets during this carnival, and also proved useful fielding at his customary Leg-1 position.
Michael George (Played All 7 games) - "Geo" once again had a great carnival, and if SA won a few more games, he may have been picked in the Australian squad of 16 for the 2nd year in a row. As mentioned above he has batted well with John, and his all round consistent game is a plus for the side. Geo took the back stumps this year, where he did a great job, even if he is probably more suited to the 2-line or behind the stumps. Another great carnival by the "Geo".
Paul Mattschoss (NSW) - Paul made it onto yet another "tour of duty", however unfortunately this time he only got the one game. "Matcha" trained well leading up to the carnival, but just couldn't break into the starting 8, and then the team balance didn't allow him more than one game. When put in against NSW, he more than held his own by taking up the unusual position of Leg-1 (as replacement for John Lonergan) and then batted well in a low scoring affair.
Darren Hammond (NT) - Like Paul Mattschoss, "Hammo" couldn't break into the starting 8, and then was only given the one game to prove himself. "Hammo" trained extremely well in the early training sessions, but an injury just before the carnival meant he missed out on being able to make a push for the starting 8.
Andy Neville (ACT,WA) - "Nev" made his comeback after a couple of years out injured, and and it was hoped he could provide that extra spark with his "hard at it" attitude. Unfortunately he strained his side against WA, and took no further part in the carnival. In the games he played he bowled very well, and worked hard with the bat to be involved in two good partnerships.
Cathy Schulz (Captain)..................................................[Keeper]
For the 2nd year in a row, the SA girls did the State proud by coming 3rd in the National Championships.
Belinda "Billy" Noak had a great carnival with the bat, after missing the starting 8 at the beginning
Andrea McCauley (Captain).......................................................[Leg-1]
This team improved more than any other State Side in 1998. To come from winning only 1 game in 1997,
to finishing 3rd in 1998 is a magnificent achievement. The side was relatively unchanged from the
previous year, with the exceptions of Carolyn Dittmar and Denise Hayes coming into the side. "Ditts"
was a major part of the success, as her experience and consistency gave the team the edge that was
lacking in the previous year.
Everyone learnt from 1997, including the Coach, and this made it all the better when South Australia destroyed the likes of Victoria, Tasmania and Northern Territory, and pushed both New South Wales and Queensland. SA only lost to the NSW, the eventual winners, by 12 runs in the first game of the carnival. Maybe if we had approached the game a bit more positively a win may have resulted (another lesson learned).
The team spirit of this side is fantastic, and there is no doubt that this contributed greatly to the success. Every single player contributed significantly, and every player improved on different areas which they had previously struggled with, and this was extremely pleasing for the Coach.
Congratulations to Andrea McCauley for being voted equal Player of the Series, and also on making the Australian side. Congratulations to Carolyn Dittmar on making the Australian side. These 2 players have been recognised officially by the AICF, but I felt there were a couple of others who could have snuck in like Charmayne "Stackers" Sorrell for her amazing batting efforts, and also Angela Lee for her consistent batting and constantly taking wickets with her Leg-Spin. After the carnival we had our own "Awards" ceremony, where I personally thanked every player for their contribution.
Andrea McCauley (Played All games) - "Max" is the gun player of this side, as she proved by winning Player of the Series. She batted very well during the carnival, and at times bowled magnificently to completely confuse the opposition. She seems to have a knack of knowing when the team needs her to do something inspirational, and then she does it. Twice during the carnival we were looking flat and needed a lift, and both times "Max" took an amazing catch at Leg-1 and completely turned the game. A great captain as she constantly encourages her players and has the respect of everyone who plays with and against her. A magnificent carnival.
Angela Lee (Played All games) - Ange has a great ability to front up time and time again and produce the goods. Ange will admit she wasn't in the peak of physical condition for this carnival, but she still managed to be in the top 3 in both bowling and batting statistics. Ange also gives 110% for her State, and provided many a laugh with her "dives" when batting and fielding up the back. Her Leg-Spin bowling is a treat to watch, and by the end of the carnival batters were simply running at her and hoping for the best. A very consistent carnvial by the VC.
Charmayne Sorrell (Played All games) - "Wak" has a great deal of fun while she plays, and this was all the more frustrating for the other States this year as she averaged nearly 20 off her own bat for the carnival. Stackers was extremely unfortunate not to make the Australian side, as she had a great carnival with the bat and also at Leg-1 where she destroyed a number of batting pairs single handedly. Great to see such a talented player still understands that enjoying the game is the prime objective.
Trudy Glazbrook(Played All games) - Trudy cops a lot of flak on tour, as she is a bit more serious than most. But all would agree that Trudy would make any State Side when in form. Trudy
opened that batting with Ditts most of the carnival, and they consistently put on 40+. Trudy also bowled quite quick at
times, and she proved a bit of a find behind the stumps doing some very neat work.
Carolyn Dittmar(Played All games) - Ditts is a bit of an enigma, as she is not a dynamic player, and yet she has the statistics of one. Ditts averaged approximately 20 off her own bat and blew several games apart by demoralising sides with her relentless run scoring. Her bowling wasn't as penetrating as she would have liked, and she took a couple of games to get into the fielding side of her game, but eventually it all clicked and she went on to make the Australian side.
Julie Thomas (NSW,TAS,VIC,NT,Prelim,Semi) - Thommo's keeping was once again fantastic, and the extra work she did to improve her throwing paid off with a couple of timely run outs. Her Leg-Spin bowling, like Ange, proved a big weapon for us and produced a number of wickets and "dot balls". "Thommo" and Ali nearly won us the game against NSW with some remarkable batting, and Thommo getting fired up was a favourite with the home crowd who love a fighter. Thommo is another player who knows when to fire up the team, and when to do something special.
Alison Bee (NSW,TAS,VIC,NT,Prelim,Semi) - Ali is a hard worker who always puts in 100% for herself and team. She was the strike bowler of the side with her fast bowling, and she put a number of pairs on the back foot with some rather sharp bowling. Her fielding on the 2-line was very good, except that her lack of accuracy cost her a number of wickets she deserved. Ali didn't have a great carnival with the bat, but on occasions, like NSW, showed she was capable of tearing an attack apart.
Lesley Lonergan (TAS,NT,Prelim,Semi) - "Shins" had a great carnival, and was unlucky not to get more games in the minor round, but her good work was rewarded with a finals spot. Lesley really worked hard on her bowling in the months leading up, and took a number of crucial wickets to secure or win the side Skins. Her fielding on the 2-line was very solid, her batting as usual produced a number of runs. Another player who has a fabulous attitude to the game and her teammates, and this helped bring a fun attitude to the side. If only the Coach wasn't such a bastard (sorry Babe).
Jacqui Edgar (NSW,NT,QLD) - Jacqui trained really well leading up to the carnival, and this got her a spot in the starting 8. Unfortunately it just didn't click for Jacqui during this carnival, and although she performed well in the last 2 games she played, she didn't play as well as she would have liked. Jacqui realised this and made a point of giving an amazing amount of support from the sidelines, and therefore helping her teammates reach the finals and have a successful tournament. Along with Lesley, Jacqui proved a vital part of the team morale and positive attitude.
Denise Hayes (NT,VIC,QLD) - Denise also had a good carnival and was unfortunate not to get more games. She batted very well against Victoria and Queensland, and it was her batting which she struggled with leading up to the tournament. Her bowling was very good, and it was only her lack of flexibility in the field which cost her a finals spot.
Iain Scott (Managed All Games) - "Dottie" managed the team as only he can. He copped plenty of abuse, and gave plenty back, but at the end of the day he busted his ass to make sure the team had sufficient water, supplies etc. At one stage he had been gone for 2 hours because he was looking for a resin bag one of the girls had asked for. Dottie is to be congratulated for doing a thankless job, and doing it with the eccentricity that he lends to the job.

Unfortunately they couldn't quite compete with QLD and NSW, but then again they were streets ahead
of the other states. There were a number of great individual performances, but unfortunately none of
the girls made the Australian Squad for the World Cup (a bit strange really!). Nicole Simon once again
had a good carnival, however it wasn't quite as consistent as her 1997 Carnival. Nicole is an extremely
promising indoor cricketer, we have to work hard to make sure she continues, as there is a danger we
could lose her to Outdoor committments.
of the carnival. "Billy" and Nicole often batted last, for which Coach "Skunny" received some
criticism, however they proved that they were capable of handling the pressure and consistently
flayed all attacks. Captain Cathy Schulz was her usual inspirational self, and Jane Koen fielded
very well at Leg-1 and created a lot of opportunities. All up the team had a great carnival, and
there were some good signs with new players stepping up to the occasion.
