With only 8 players in the main squad, plus Darren Martin to play where possible, it was always going to be a tough week.

It is a credit to the guys that we remained competitive right up until the last game against QLD, scoring more against them than VIC and NSW did, and QLD needed to win the last game well in order to secure a Top 2 finish.

The week started brilliantly with a clinical display against an understrength WA. They weren't a great side, but the NSW Coach commented that he was impressed with the way we beat them. We then lost a close one to NQ who played quite well, but unfortunately it was our worst game for the tournament and just came at the wrong time. Any other game we played during the week would have resulted in us beating them well.

Early in the week the ACT were by far the best bowling and fielding side of the tournament, and we hit them at their peak. We restricted them to about 90 with some good bowling and fielding, but some undisciplined outs in our 2nd and 3rd pairs made the job too hard. It was disappointing to see players react badly under pressure by playing shots that aren't representative of the way we trained ourselves, but that just demonstrates the immaturity of SA Indoor Cricket and the affect of lacking consistently good cricket in our Superleague competition.

The VICs strong bowling line up got stuck into some of the rookies to keep our score down, and our bowling earlier had let them score 25-30 more than they should have. Our game improved remarkably later that afternoon against NSW, batting first to score 93 against a strong bowling and fielding side who were playing well. NSW then batted magnificently to chase down our score, and later acknowledged that we were much better than they gave us credit for, and agreed that their run chase was under a great deal of pressure.

The last game against QLD could have been a white wash as we were out of finals, but to the credit of the team we maintained our focus on playing the best cricket we could and enjoying representing SA. We frustred QLD with some scrappy batting and lots of 1s, but didn't give them easy wickets and made them chase a competitive total. They batted very well and got the score comfortably, but still had to work through patches of good bowling and fielding by SA.

Highlights

Two scores of 45 and 46 by Matt Verrall and Chris Buttfield to start the tournament made other sides stand up and take notice of 2 very strong bats, and that SA was here to play hard.

The first LBW I have ever seen in Mens Open, Matt Verrall smashed into the Leg of an NQ player and he hadn't even finished his backlift, the boys went crazy over that one.

John Lonergan clean bowling a guy 2 balls in a row. It's a distinct possibility that this batter will never play cricket again due to the mental scarring that is associated with being dismissed by such ferocious bowling!!

James Nash working hard to lose his nickname of "Tippy" earnt from early tournament batting disappointments, to work out how to survive and compete against VICs, NSW and QLD. Always good to see a rookie learn on the job and finish strong.

Matt Verrall executing and jumping move at point to get a run out, and then claiming he had no idea how he did it.

Entertainment Coordinator Adam Berry devising various calls to be made during games when wickets were claimed such as "Spiderman", "Jocks", "3 Strands of Hair", "Verrall's a Joke", and saving the best for the last game against QLD in dedication to our Neighbours look-a-like Manager Terry Richens, "Harold".

Chris Buttfield being recognised as an ID Player for the Australian Squad. Chris was extremely close to being selected in the actual team, but was probably let down by a lack of wickets being taken in the field by the team.

Lowlights

Losing to NQ due to a couple of "brain fades" in the batting. A clear indication of the need to know how you will react under pressure situations, again a reflection on the lack of pressure in our Superleague competition which means players don't get the proper preparation.

Too many times losing multiple wickets in a row, players need to know how to regroup after getting out, and not try to get the wicket back or just switch off and sulk.

Fifth year in a row of not making finals. More a Lowlight of the lack of desperation in SA to play State cricket than a reflection on the 8 blokes that had the guts to take a risk and represent SA.

At the end of the week awards were presented to players based on their performances in each game. The voting was done by using the Net Score (Runs made Batting minus Runs off Bowling) from each game and assigning points on an 8 through to 1 (8 being the best) to each player based on the Net Score.

WA - Matt Verrall
NQ - Matt Verrall

Summary by Drew Moorcroft, U16s Coach

The boys started off a little shaky with a first game loss to Victoria, but managed to throw off the nerves to dominate North Queensland in the next game. Generally though an unlucky week for the guys, just missing out on finals by 1 point and losing several skins by less then 3 runs during the week. The double round, plus hot and humid conditions hit the guys hard, and possibly cost us a few points late in the week, with a few players fatigued or sick by the end.

Wins against NQ, Victoria and grand finalists WA were some of the highlights of the week, along with several consistent performances by Patrick Opie, Richard Baker, Chris Prout and Jayms Bleeze.

A big thankyou to Tony and Leonie Keeley for there help with transporting the guys to and from games and a massive thank you to John, Ange and Cathy for your help, support and guidance during the week, it was very, very much appreciated!

In a quick summary, unfortunately the team did not win a game during the Nationals. However this sounds a lot worse than the week actually was, with SA winning 2 skins in every game (3 against ACT) but not having the experience to get over the line. An 8 run loss to North Queensland who made the GF, and had several teams in trouble but lacked the bowling penetration to kill off batting pairs.

A contributing factor to the teams unsuccessful week was the absence after 2 games of the Coach, John Lonergan. Unfortunately (or fortunately) John's wife went into labour a week early and so John had to forgo his coaching role after only 2 games. This didn't have a tangible effect on the team as they still had to do the actual work, but whenever a team loses a senior member it is difficult. Especially in this case where John had put in place several new ideas and principles, and with such a young side they probably needed a consistent voice to keep them on track and help when things were tough. Having said that Terry Richens stepped up to the role admirably, and was able to take over based on his working with the team throughout trainings, and also having been Manager for the past 9 Nationals and having a great deal of experience.

Highlights were the performances of Daniel McKay and Dino Vrynios, with both stepping up as we all thought they would and proving to be a strong batting pair for the tournament. A mention also to Brett Martin in his first year as captain of his State at the Open level. It is a tough job at the best of times, but seeing as though he's only 26 himself, and with such a young squad and losing the coach during the week, Brett was able to keep the team competitive on the court and get them to win as many skins as the second placed side for the week.

Each year the Mens Open side vote on a 3-2-1 basis on each game, with the players on the bench each game doing the voting. This years winner of the "King Cobra Cup" was Daniel McKay. Unfortunately our fines committee was extremely useless, so we had no funds to be able to purchase an actual cup to give him !!

This was the first step in the changes being implemented by new Coach John Lonergan. The batting has improved already with the emphasis on batting with balance and respecting the good ball, this is shown by the new consistency that carried throughout the tournament. 2005 will continue to build on the batting principles, and also now put more emphasis on the bowling with focus on consistency and controlling the ball. There will also be continued focus on the developing the passion principle to ensure all players understand what it really takes to play FOR SA.

Everyone who plays Superleague is urged to put themselves up for selection for the 2005 Nationals to be held in Mackay, Qld. John Lonergan will be the Coach again, and there will be a significant effort to get as many people trialling as possible to ensure the next phase moves us from Consistency to a Finals Campaign.

Trials will likely be held in September 2004, with either a squad of 16 or the final squad of 11 being selected, depending on numbers trying out, and trainings occurring over the summer period with a focus on individual sessions and also doing some fundraising to assist in costs.

If you know of any companies that would like the chance to get their business name or logo on our playing shirts, please pass their details on to John Lonergan so I can talk to them about the exposure we can provide to their business.

The side once again made finals with some strong performances early in the week, but the loss of Andrea McCauley for the Finals due to injury probably cost us a Prelim Final berth, as her experience and skills would have helped this young squad. The team started really well with a good first up win against Victoria, but didnt manage to get another win on the board. Even though we didnt manage to win more then 1 game, the boys deserve alot of credit for their never say die attitude, managing to take skins off every team, including Queensland and Grand Final winners WA and earn a place in the Semi's. The attitude was fantastic but unfortunately the team lacked the endurance to play 32 overs of good cricket a game and quite often let 1 or 2 batting pairs get away.

Generally though, as coach of the side I am very pleased with majority of the players who I believe all developed as indoor cricketers with the bat and ball and also mentally. Stand out performers were Jonny Vrynios, Scott Shorne, Matt Starr and Craig Dollman, but as I said the entire team really did a great job, Callum Wright and Brenton Lowrey consistently scored 25+ each time they batted.

Also Id like to take this time to thank all the parents for their support, especially those involved with transporting the lads to the games, Tony and Zak, I definately couldn't have done it without your support and it was much appreciated. Also thanks to other SA teams, and other SA coaches, Ange, Cath and John, for your help, support and guidance, it was very much appreciated

Well done to Drew Moorcroft and Zak Joannou for taking on the Coaching responsibilities, 2 young guys who saw an opportunity to learn and help others and did a fantastic job.

Plenty of changes from the 2003 side which finished 3rd in the minor round but stuffed up in the Finals, but for those players that aren't playing from last year, they have been more than adequately replaced by the likes of Pottsy, Flea, Richard Lamerton, Ash Tharaldsen and Mike Wilson. Congratulations to Mike for making his first State side, and welcome back to Paul Smith who had to withdraw from the Open last year due to injury, and should enjoy his first Masters carnival (make sure you bring your ID Flea !).

Also congratulations to Warwick Potts for being named Captain, he's been Coach and Vice Captain of the side in previous years, so it's great he now has the opportunity to Captain his State. Along with new Coach Colin Tuckwell, and Vice Captain Darren Martin, this side will definitely play Finals cricket barring injuries, and with the lessons learned from last year should hopefully push for a Grand Final berth.

A disappointing carnival overall, with the King Cobra's only winning the 1 game for the week.

Now that I've had some time to get over the disappointment of the week, I've had a chance to reflect on some of the issues we faced as a team, and some of the positives that came out:

With the loss of the following players for various reasons, it gives some indication of the experience and talent lost from the squad - Paul Smith, Michael George, Daniel McKay, Dino Vrynios, Al Lubke. The loss of experienced players such as John Lonergan, Paul Mattschoss and Darren Martin meant that the squad competing at the 2003 championships was extremely thin on what to expect.

The Highlights:

A fantastic start to the first game of the tournament by 2 rookies opening the batting in Brett Jorgensen and Matt Verrall, scoring 47.

The team being 100 in the 11th over of the first game against eventual Prelim finalists ACT, only to see the score disappear.

Consistent performances by newcomers Matt Verrall, Brett Jorgensen and Rob Hopkins.

Chris Buttfield taking the step up to Open level after a nervous first 2 games, to finish opening the batting and proving a consistent performer.

Finally getting a win on the board against Nth Qld in the last game, winning the game comfortably and giving the rookies a taste of what it's like to sing the team song and enjoy the Nationals.

A strong batting effort against eventual winners NSW, scoring 115 chasing 150. Shane Martin and Grant Doran put away their inhibitions and absolutely laced them to score 39, including a 7 off the last ball by "Donk" to win the skin (which was 38).

Perennial bowling "whipping boy" Neil Bowles claiming 4 clean bowleds for the carnival, thus ending the career of 4 players. One of the Queenslanders was looking at a Grand Final birth, but after receiving the scientific heater from Bowlesy, he ended up on the bench for the big game.

A solid week with the bat by the boys, but as expected their bowling was a problem due to a lack of experience and also a lack of penetration in the attack.

Some good signs with a lot of the players showing sparks of brilliance, and the move to Under 20s next year will ensure all players can continue with their State careers and improve their games.

Terry and Mark opened the batting in most games, and I can't remember them scoring below 30, 2 players who the Men's Open coach has his eye on for future years.

Also impressive in the field was Zak Joannou, who worked very hard on the 2 line and stood out as a quality fielder with a good arm and quick release.

After a very good minor round performance, once again the lads were knocked out in the first final played. However this year was more disappointing, as we lost to the bottom ranked side.

All Australian Selections

Brad White
Glen Tisdale

A fantastic carnival by both players, with Glen playing his first ever State tournament and bowling extremely quick to catch the selectors eye. He also forced his way into an opening batting spot when V/C Darren Martin was injured, and batted brilliantly with Warren "Spoggy" Brooks.

Brad white in his first Masters carnival proved that he really is a class player, by averaging over 20 off his bat for the carnival, and doing some great work at point during the week. Brad also bowled with good pace, and was the perfect strike bowling option to compliment Glen during games.

The selection of these 2 players is a compliment to the entire squad, as we were playing very good cricket and forced the selectors to stand up and notice.

Maybe Morphett Vale will now rethink Glen playing in the B's !!!!!

A word from the Captain/Coach, John Lonergan

A few people will criticise myself and the team for making the decision to rest some players for this first final, assuming that this is the reason we lost.

This is merely a cop out excuse for losing, and also is an insult to the 8 blokes who took the court. As Coach I had 100% confidence in the team put on the court to do the job, and they proved they had the skill to do it by hitting 112 and then creating 30+ chances in the field. Unfortunately combinations of nerves, bad luck and pressure meant the execution was lacking and we lost in the last over.

I just want to make it clear that the reason for us losing the game was not because the 8 on the court weren't good enough. After a few days to think about it, I think our overall strategy for the work was slightly wrong because the competition this year was very tight, and there wasn't the usual 1 or 2 teams well ahead of the pack. We discovered this mid week as results were so close (3 games results were 4-3 where the winning team only 1 won the single skin), and therefore our approach to player selection early in the week may have been incorrect based on this.

The most disappointing thing is that everyone, including opposition sides, believed we were the best chance of winning that we have ever had when playing at our best.

I fully expect people to be disappointed, and even angry, and as Captain/coach I take full responsibility, however please do not disrespect the players that played the final by saying they weren't good enough to win.

Thankyou for your support of the team.

The team had a good week, just missing out on 3rd spot which would have put them against NSW in the Semi and given them a great chance of playing in their first Grand Final. However it wasn't to be, and Queensland proved too good in the Semi and went on to win the title comfortably.

The team batted brilliantly during week, chasing down some large totals, and nearly beating Queensland in the minor round chasing 140 (lost by 8 runs, won 3 skins).

A few players are starting to talk about retirement, but hopefully with next years Nationals being in Perth this may give them the impetus to step up one more time.

A disappointing carnival for the lads, with inconsistency being the main problem during the week. They played some brilliant cricket at times, but often let themselves in 1 or 2 pairs during the game which cost them dearly.

Everyone in the squad played some great cricket at times, but unfortunately as a unit it didn't quite click. And as we all know, the team has to have that "bubble" in order to really exceed at this level.

A tough initiation for Darren Hammond in Coaching, but hopefully he takes it for the lesson it is and realises that sometimes things don't go to plan, and you just need to give it another go.

Due to time differences in game slots, I didn't get to see too many of the games the "Silverbacks" played. However they missed out on finals due to a shocking day Tuesday when they lost 2 games by less than 5 runs, on the last ball. That's enough to dent the confidence of any team.

As with the women, there was talk of retirement, but the trip to Perth may have injected some life into the old boys.

Unfortunately the King Cobra's could only manage the 2 wins for the carnival, but it wasn't due to a lack of effort on the training track or during the week. A combination of inexperience, injuries to key players and some bad luck meant SA yet again missed the finals. However the performances against Grand Finalists Victoria and Queensland were very good, and showed that we can match it with anyone when playing at our peak.

The loss to Western Australia will haunt the side for a while, and it seems we have created our own nemesis in WA by losing to this side at crucial times over the last few years.

Col Robinson instilled some very good technical and mental aspects into the game this year, and hopefully most of the players continue to work hard on their games and create a more consistent style of play to that which we've shown previously. Concentrating on things such as calling when batting, backing up correctly and bowling to a set plan all showed up during the week, with a few sides making comment that we had come a fair way from previous years in our discipline and focus during games.

Paul Cree has made the effort to put together all the stats (for those keen on stats) so you can see how your mates and State Representatives went during each game.

Congratulations to the female Cobra's for finishing in the Finals and competing well against the top teams. Unfortunately they came up against Queensland in the knockout Semi, and they were just way too powerful as they went on to win the Tournament.

A good mix of youth and experience this year definitely helped some of the younger players, with the likes of Shae and Neisha showing definite improvement, and players with a bit more experience like Georgina, Amy and Jessie also taking the next step.

The best news of the carnival was the selection of Belinda "Billy" Noack in the Australian World Cup Squad to tour New Zealand later this year. Everyone in SA will know that Billy works very hard at her cricket, and is the ultimate team person who deserves this recognition. Her bowling troubled all batters during the carnival, and she was extremely solid with the bat. I personally had a go at her in one game, because there was one ball while she was batting where she ran and didn't dive in an attempt to make her ground !! Total dedication and plenty of talent have been well rewarded, and this is also a reflection on the rest of the squad in making the selectors take notice of a strong side to see who was performing well.

Grand Finalists for the first time ever, a fantastic effort from everyone involved. Once again they played the game in the spirit it was meant, and taught a few of us so called "normal" people that at times we should just pull our heads in and enjoy our cricket, as maybe that's the key to being successful.

An added bonus was the selection of Michael Sloggett in the All-Star team. Michael has played for a number of years, and showed his excitement and pride when his name was announced. I think he hugged every single SA Cobra player in each team at least twice, and it was great to see everyone from SA showing their appreciation to Michael for representing SA so well.

A big congratulations to the Coaching Staff and parents involved. They aren't after any recognition, but maybe ISSA could do something by way of recognising their efforts as I'm sure they put a lot more into the team than we could ever imagine.

Grand Finalists, you beauty !!

The lads lost to Queensland in the Grand Final, but not before posting a very respectable 108, and then busting their humps in the field to try and stop the Queensland juggernaut. Unfortunately they just missed out, but not before they made it known to everyone in Indoor Cricket in Australia that South Australia are on the right track, and producing some seriously good cricketers.

Their win in the Preliminary Final was the best game I have ever seen the SA Under 18s play, with them absolutely dominating with the bat and batting with supreme discipline to hit 140, and the bowling and fielding with courage and determination to hold the best batting team in the competition (WA) under the score. Maybe they played their GF one game too early, but just making the Grand Final was enough to make everyone their and hopefully back home proud of their efforts.

Icing on the cake was that Dino Vrynios and Daniel McKay were selected to represent Australia at the Under 19 World Cup in South Africa in 2003. Both boys played very well, in taking responsibility for important overs with the ball and batting at crucial times to show they could perform under pressure. Chris Buttfield also had a magnificent carnival, and was unlucky not to be selected, but the Selectors have spoken to Chris and explained where he needs to keep working. He has another year or two in the 18s, so there's plenty of time for him.

A pleasure to actually have to turn up for a Grand Final day, rather than begrudgingly going along to watch yet another Qld vs NSW or Victoria final.

A word of congratulations to Angela Lee the Coach of the side. Ange not only has to deal with young men who believe they know pretty much everything and have hormones going berserk, but also the parents who are solely focussed (and rightly so) on making sure their own child is looked after. Ange has worked very hard with this group for 4 years, and she deserves every single bit of recognition given to her, and then some. So if you see her during Superleague, give her a pat on the back and a "well done", because she could be the one person who has started South Australia on the track to be Australian Champions.

Congratulations to Peter Gladigau for selection in the Over 35s Australian side to play against England, South Africa and New Zealand in Perth in October. The AICF decided that any players that were 35 or over at the time of the championships, regardless of which grade they were playing in, were eligible for selection in the squad. It should also be noted that John Lonergan was a Selector for the All-Star team for the Over 30s Men, this is recognition of the work that Warwick Potts has done in previous years in lifting the profile of the side, and also the work that all SA sides have done to make us a force in Masters cricket.

Click Here for specific details on the Over 30s championships including game results, all Australian team and Player of the Series.

The Over 30s Men made the finals as expected, but due to a couple of injuries and some disappointing form with the bat, we were knocked out in the first Semi Final against NSW.

The Semi was a great game, with SA only scoring 81, but bowling and fielding brilliantly for the first 13 overs of the game. But then the experienced and hard-hitting NSW pair tried to hit their way out of trouble, and it worked. They scored nearly 50 runs off the last 3 overs to win by 1 run. To say the SA team was shattered is an understatement.

Coach's Comments by John Lonergan

Selections

Selection Panel - John Lonergan, Peter Gladigau, Warwick Potts, Ian Waters.

The selection process for games was extremely difficult at times, with one selection meeting going for 20 minutes just trying to get the balance right, give players the rest they needed etc.

The decisions were hard because all 12 players played very good cricket when they got an opportunity, and the flexibility we had in the field, and the players ability to adapt to whatever batting position they were put in made it tough. This was a great position to be in as a coach, as I was forced to sit out players who were playing well enough to earn a spot. I also had an opportunity to rest some of the older players such as Glads, Jammo and Spook to ensure they could play at their optimum during the Finals.

Injuries

Another disappointing tournament for injuries, with players putting in some hard yards leading up to the tournament, but luck once again going against the team. Everyone in the squad did what they could to manage their injuries and get themselves through games, and that was good to see. However if we want to be genuinely serious about winning a National Championship, we may need to go the extra mile and do some of the small things a bit better and be a bit more professional in game preparation, body management etc.

Highlights

The Ability to Have Fun - The team morale, laughs, team sayings, sarcasm were all flowing very well as it usually does on a Masters tour, and I think I can speak for everyone in the squad when I say it was a good fun trip where we busted our ass on the court, and worked just as hard to enjoy ourselves off it.

Wassup! and Butterfly - The team saying "Wassup!" and our own version of the Butterfly song provided many fun moments, andalso helped relax the team on the way to games.

Zip Zap Breton - Mick Breton is generally considered quite quick between the wickets, but there was one effort against North Queensland where we watch in awe as Mick smashed the ball straight to a 2 Line fielder, who turned and hit the stumps direct, and Mick made his ground. An absolutely astonishing effort.

It Clicked...nearly - In the Semi Final we put on a display of fielding and bowling that was close to the best I'd seen from any team in the carnival to date. Just a shame we hadn't built a solid enough foundation during the minor rounds to post a 100+ score. The Vics were very glad they didn't have to play us in the Prelim.

Poteye comes good - Leading up to the tournament we were all looking forward to seeing Pottsy strut his stuff and play the great cricket he can. Unfortunately for him it took a while to get going, but when he did he batted the house down, and his bowling finally clicked in the last couple of games. Along with Mick Breton he was our highest votegetter in the Player of the Series, and if SA had performed a bit better in the minor round he would have been a good chance to make All Australian. Only player to play every game, and was probably the fittest bloke at the end of the carnival.

Supporters - The support the team (and the Coach !) received from Stacey (Mrs Spook), Vanessa (Mrs Poteye), Marilyn (Mrs Sheff) and Lesley (Mrs Coach) was absolutely fantastic the whole week. From tending to injuries, giving massages, consoling after a bad game or after being rested, they did a great job and were an integral part of the squad. With the final highlight being a presentation to each member of the squad a singlet with a specific Monkey cartoon which related to each player.
