NB: Due to the size of the file I have had to create a WinZip file that you download and then extract onto your PC. If you don't have WinZip, simply visit www.winzip.com and you can download it for free, it simply compresses files so they are better for emailing etc. If you have problems send me an email at webmaster@indoorcricketsa.com and I'll email that stats to you.

Schlong's Tips for 2004
A Grade Grand Final - Woodlands and Stepney
Verdict - Bingo ! Right on the money, thanks lads.
A Grade Top 4 - Woodlands, Modbury, Stepney, Morphett Vale
Verdict - 3 out of 4 right, just didn't count on the Windsor lads totally reinventing themselves at the expense of the Sharks who just couldn't put it together this year.
Basheer Medal - Dino Vrynios (Stepney)
Verdict - Didn't make the Top 10, must have got him confused with his "other half" D Mac !
Dark Horse for Basheer Medal - Scott Martin (Camden)
Verdict - Didn't make the Top 10, the Goats only winning 1 game didn't really help his cause !
Other Contenders for Basheer Medal - Mark Frampton (Modbury), Warwick Potts (Woodlands), Matt Verrall (M/Vale)
Verdict - Only "Frangas" has made the Top 10 from this group, so I'm still a chance !
Paul Smith Medal (U17) - Mark Hanson (Stepney)
Verdict - Didn't make the Top 10 but not sure if he even played 17s as he's probably too old, I did the prediction when we still had U18s
by John Lonergan, State Men's Open Coach 2004
Camden Rams
A changing of the guard at Goat Park
This year the Rams will blood some more young guys in the A grade, with some of the guys
who have held the team together for the past 5 years either moving into the B's or just
player 30s. The Rams have some good raw talent, which John Lonergan will hopefully be
able to work with to develop a team that will stick together and be successful for the
next 5 or 6 years. John will retain the capataincy for 2004, with a view to grooming
Scott Martin into the role during the year to ensure a smooth transition when John gets
turfed into the Old Fellas league next year !
There is a hope that Jeremy Astill will return to the Rams, so with regular A graders of
John, Jeremy, Scott Martin, Ryan Presser and Mark Galvin, and the promotion of Brad
Holt to the A grade, this should hopefully mean a competitive unit takes the court every
week. The numbers at Camden are always a problem so the Cs and Ds may struggle, but the
Womens side has some new recruits, and with Lesley Lonergan taking on a coaching role (due
to the imminent arrival of a junior schlong or schlongette) hopefully they will continue
their good form they had in the second half of last year.
The Over 30s side should make finals with a more steady side this year with most of the
players hopefully only playing the 1 game a day rather than the 2 or 3 games most of us
played last year.
Woodlands Cougars
The A grade suffered a serious set back in it's preparation to try for three premierships in a row with the news of Shane Martin's forced retirement (knee Injury).
But with the return of Warwick Potts and the inclusion of first year King Cobra, speedster Paul Tam
and every other player from last years premiership side back this will ensure a well rounded balance to the side.
The B grade have a side that has played very successfully together for a while now.
With the likes of senior players Dan Aptomos, Ty Jenkins and Lee Pattison and young guns
Sean Rankin and Steve Payne all knocking on A grades door, making selection very difficult. Masters are looking there usual threatening selves with many State reps leading the way. Haven't heard to much about the other grades but I'm reliably informed they are all strong teams.
Bretty Martin, A Grade Captain.
JL Comments - Even with the loss of Shane Martin I still think Woodlands are the team to beat, as
getting Pottsy back is a big bonus, and young Steven Payne is a promising player who should play
some A's this year. As Brett said the B's are always strong, with a few players needing to push
out of their comfort zone a bit and try to play some A grade cricket. The lower grades will be
strong again, not sure about the Masters as there are quite a few movements in players not playing etc.
but if they get settled early they should still be strong.
Morphett Vale Sharks
I don't know too much about the Sharks progress, except that the Men's Open side played against a Sharks
superleague side a few weeks ago that included Matt Verrall, Matt Skrokov, Matt tonks (a few more Matt's would be
good !), Adam Berry, and Todd Sheedy and David Sampson were playing for the Open side. Along with Scott Heywood,
it means the Sharks will have a strong A grade side, and they usually field strong sides in the Bs, Cs and Ds so they
will be around the mark as usual.
If some of the players in the As can rekindle their fire in the belly, they could give premiership a real push as there
are some genuine match winners in the side.
Stepney Saints
Submitted by Men's Open Player and Schlong's 2004 tip for the Basheer (Kiss of Death, sorry Dino) - Dino Vrynios
The Saint's coming off their most successful season for some time are looking to push on and exceed all expectations once again. The youth policy adopted three seasons ago has payed dividends as the A-Grade's oldest player will be new State 30's selection Michael "Shrek" Wilson. The next closest being Grant Doran and then some distance to Neil Bowles and the rest of the squad fitting into the 16-23 bracket. Our A grade squad for Superleague '04 (state team) : Neil BOWLES (open), Grant DORAN (open), Mark HANSON (18's), Rob HOPKINS (open), Ben JOHNSWOOD, Matt MAY (21's), Daniel McKAY (open), Dino VRYNIOS (open), Mike WILSON (30's), Tom WILSON (18's), Kim WIMBUSH (21's). Captain TBA.
The success both on and off court for the cricketer's at Stepney has meant that there has been a huge influx of players wanting to pull on a shirt. This will only strengthen our lower grades and provide us with the luxury of having "too many players, not enough spots." Something not experienced since the golden days of the sport. Our Ladies A side will return to the top of the women's competition following the disappointing season had last year. A host of returning players and a number of newcomers will be under the experienced leadership of Cathy Schultz and Carolyn Dittmar, meaning that the Ladies will be a force to be reckoned with. Our Master's sides, both 30's and 35's will be very competitive as the increase in numbers will allow our senior Saints to be required for just the one game a day versus last season when they played B's, C's or D's then 35's. Even manager Stewart Frew played a game or two last year. The Baby Saints, now playing in just the one grade, have a high standard to maintain after winning both the 16's and 18's last year. With a couple of State players and young district cricketers under the instruction of Daniel McKay and Dino Vrynios the future at Saintland is very promising. We look forward to the shortened season and wish all other centers the best for '04.
The Saints
Windsor Guards
I know very little about Windsor Gardens, except that they have lost the services of Chris Buttfield (Men's Open player
gone to Modbury) and Terry Nelligan from their A grade. However with new management in place and Angela Lee running the
show down there, I'm sure they will field competitive sides, as long as they have the numbers to fill the grades.
Modbury Chiefs
Submitted by Mark "Frangas" Frampton, crazy ABBA loving Chief player and former State Rep
Hey there Schlong,
Bit of info for you in regards to Modbury for super league 2004. A grade has
lost Rich Lamerton, DJ and Justin Shore ( all playing over 30's ) but picked
up Chris Buttfield & Terry Nelligan ( Windsor ). A grade this year will be
treated as a rebuilding side with myself at 23 probably the oldest bod on
the court. Over 30's will be very strong this year with more recent A
graders Rich Lamerton, DJ, Justin Shore, Ash Tharaldsen, Ray Taverner and
rumour has it maybe even the services of 2 more recent A graders from
Windsor Gardens this year. Junior grades looking very strong again with
several players in the state under 18 side this year, most of these guys
will be playing in the higher grades as well as 17 & unders.
JL Comment - The Over 30s side looks like a belter, however they need to be
careful that complacency doesn't set it as it did for Camden last year when
on paper we had a gun team, but unfortunately we play cricket on a court, not
on paper ! The A grade will be a very young side but with some quality young
players in Bucky, Terry, Mark Hanson and Paul cree, Jake Haberfield, Rocco. So
if they can learn to keep their heads and play smart cricket I still think they
will give the finals a shake. Modbury is always strong in the lower grades due
to their numbers of players, and their Juniors will continue to do well which
is great to see. The Women's side will be strong if the "usual suspects" continue
to play.
