Schlong's Tips for 2005
Tips as at Start of Season
A Grade Grand Final - Woodlands and Morphett Vale
A Grade Top 4 - Woodlands, Morphett Vale, Stepney, Modbury
Basheer Medal - Sean Watt (Woodlands) - yes, back to back
Dark Horse for Basheer Medal - John Lonergan (Camden) - year of the schlong !
Other Contenders for Basheer Medal - Grant Doran (Stepney), Daniel McKay (Stepney), Matt Verrall (M/Vale), Scott Martin (Camden)
Paul Smith Medal (U18) - Michael Ledgard (M/Vale)
Revised Tips as at 12 July
A Grade Grand Final - Same as original with Woodlands and Morphett Vale, Woodlands to take it out based on too much experience under pressure. - CORRECT!
A Grade Top 4 - Same as original in Woodlands, Morphett Vale, Stepney, but Camden to sneak in ahead of Modbury and be a very dangerous proposition for other Finals teams due to their willingness to compete. - Modbury won the battle for 4th and went on to make the Prelim.
Basheer Medal - With Morphett Vale winning so many games, and Watty having a little hiccup against Camden which may cost him votes from some umpires, my money is now on Matt Verrall as he is an impact player who will get votes. I had him in my "other contenders" at the start of the year based on him being in the Mens Open side and focussing on his game. Only issue now is how quickly he can come back from his latest injury as this may cost him. - Flea takes it out, didn't even have him in my contenders, pretty stupid considering he's won 5 previously!
Dark Horse for Basheer Medal - Although I think I've held my own and probably snuck in with a couple of votes, I think the Dark Horse for the medal now is Matt Rogers from Modbury. Generally opens the bowling so gets seen by the Umps early, takes wickets and does some good work up the back. Batting is always solid, only issue will be complacency after the 18s Nationals may mean he won't play as well in the 2nd half. - Matty only got 3 votes, and I got 4, so between us we didn't even get half of Flea's votes, yeh good dark horses!
Other Contenders for Basheer Medal - All my original other contenders are still valid I think, probably add in David sampson (M/Vale), Shane Martin (Cougars). - Saved myself with these 2 late picks as they came equal 5th
Paul Smith Medal (U17) - Don't know if Michael Ledgard is even playing Juniors as he is playing A's, and as Camden don't have an U17 side I don't really get to see too many games. Based on performances at the U16 Nationals, young Pat Opie is a player of the future and if he's having a good season will poll well. - CORRECT With Leggars
