History of SA Indoor Cricket

This page will display State Teams from Previous Years, so that people can see the history of SA Indoor Cricket, and reminisce about when they represented SA or Australia. It is also an insight for young players to see who the stars of yesterday were. If I have misquoted any of the teams or results, please let me know. This was all done from my ever so inadequate memory so it won't be absolutely spot on to start with.

The only info I have on the 1989 Nationals is that the SA boys hadn't won a game the whole carnival, but then WA offered them 2 cartons if they beat one of the big teams (can't remember who it was, any help would be appreciated), and the boys came through thanks to their new found motivation.

Again I don't have much info, but I know Tim Wilden was extremely p&$#%ed off because he didn't even get a game, and the side didn't exactly set the world on fire, which is surprising considering the quality of players in the squad.

This was considered to be one of the weakest SA State Sides sent to the Nationals in a long time. The lack of experienced players was mainly due to the original coach selected, and his lack of committment to the team. This turned a lot of players off, and basically the squad selected itself with only 14-15 players available for selection.

There were several Rookies in the side (John Lonergan, Rodney Strike, Frank Corker, Darren Hammond) and some players with only 1 or 2 years experience at open level.

Despite people's doubts about the side, this 1993 Open side was closer to making the finals than any other side since (except 1997) as it only missed out on the finals by 1 point. This was mainly due to the undefeated NSW "throwing" their game against Queensland and allowing them into the finals (SA defeated QLD by 3 runs in the minor round).

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nationals televised on the ABC. This did a lot to lift the profile of the game

  • John Lonergan takes a hatrick against Northern Territory in one of the televised games.

This side was picked in an effort to finally get SA into the finals. Unfortunately even though the intentions were good, this side lacked the experience and consistency to carry the plan through. The Coach selected a big-hitting, fast-bowling side, and blended this with some experienced players such as Paul Mattschoss and Darren Martin.

NB: Brad Parker from Stepney was originally selected, but could not participate at the Nationals due to an injury which occurred 1 week before the tournament. Michael George replaced Brad in the squad.

This side saw some new faces come into the side, and most believed that we were getting close to the right sort of selection philosophy and team balance. The addition of Shane Martin to the squad gave us the "strike bowler" we needed, and Sean Watt and Jeremy Astill were brought in to give the batting a bit more consistency.

Alas, once again, all the potential in the world does not produce results if you don't work hard enough. An injury to Shane Martin in the first game against NSW did not help the team morale, as he missed the rest of the carnival. Maybe everyone was relying too much on Shane to provide the team with a weapon.

Michael George played exceptionally well considering the late call up he had, and as you will see below he has gone on to become one of the most consistent players in South Australia. Jeremy Astill came down from the Northern Territory (where he represented NT in 93 and 94) and added his extremely strong batting talents to the side. Jeremy had a good carnival, and his leg-spinners came out quite well. Also Andy Neville as the Vice Captain added a bit of mongrel to the side which had been missing previously.

All in all a slightly disappointing carnival, but the feeling was we were making progress towards being a force at the Nationals.

Team Photo

NB: Jeremy Astill had to pull out of the side due to an injury before the tournament.

This tournament produced a real mixed bag of results, which proved that SA was on the right track to performing well at the Championships, but still hadn't quite hit it on the head. Kevin Payne took over the reins as Coach, and there were high hopes that Kevin would let the players in on a few secrets which enabled Queensland (for whom Kevin played for in 93) to be such a force.

SA was absolutely thumped by WA and NSW, however they tied the first 3 skins with Queensland (the eventual runners-up) and then narrowly lost the game. The fact that the game was so close and yet SA did not get one single point summed up the week.

NEW RULES INTRODUCED

Skins - 1 point awarded for each batting pair, 3 points for the game
3rd Ball - Batting Team's score must move every 3 balls, otherwise batsman is given out and 5 runs taken from total.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • SA drawing the first 3 skins with Queensland, to eventually lose the game and get no points whatsoever. A little harsh.

  • Nationals televised on Channel 10.

  • In the last game of the tournament, SA played ACT and on the first ball of the match one of the ACT players bowled a lemon at Chad Campbell. The player was banned from National Championships for 4 years. The following year during the SA vs ACT game in Adelaide, a lemon was noticed sitting beneath the umpire at the back of the court.

    • All Australian - Peter Gladigau (however Simon "Spook" Morris replaced Glads on the tour to New Zealand due to Horse being unavailable). Spook performed very well for Australia, and fully deserved his place in the side as he had a brilliant carnival and really should have been in the original team. SA had only 1 player in the Australian side, even though they were easily the second best side.

    • Lost to Tasmania first game in a major upset, the boys were a bit over confident, however as it turned out this helped them get their act together and dominate the minor round.

    • Tragedy struck the team, when Tony Forde had to leave to go home for a death in the family. This affected the rest of the team greatly, and it was very hard for the boys to focus on what they needed, as everyone felt for Tony's loss. There were a few other mishaps during the week, but the lads did South Australia proud by busting their guts every game despite the mental strain they were under. The Queenslanders paid great respect to the team after the Grand Final, and this team helped put South Australia on the map as a force to be reckoned with at National Championships.

    • Warwick "Warren" Potts "Putz" was the first Coach in this era of the Masters Nationals to be dubbed the "Super Coach".

Paul Devine excelled in his first National Championships, and was unlucky not to make the All Australian side. "Horse" played the Grand Final with 2 pulled hamstrings, but somehow managed to bowl the quickest he had for the whole tournament. The entire Queensland side expected a couple of relatively easy overs from the big fella, but ended up shaking their heads as to how this guy could bowl quicker when injured.

The boys finished Runners Up to Queensland for the 3rd year in a row, and this marked the end of an era for this team. Some would go up to Over 35's (Wayne Jones, Guido Spina) and some would be unavailable in 99 (Peter Gladigau, Mark Hogan). TOURNAMENT DETAILS

A much better effort this year from the team, who have taken a bit more responsibility for their performances, and learnt a lot from the 1999 disaster.

Also a great team effort from Dino Vrynios and Chris Stuart who constantly put in and encouraged their team mates.
